SAS Scientists Design Cover for Prestigious International Journal Phytotherapy Research
A graphic design created by Oľga Pecháňová and Maroš Schmidt from the Institute of Normal and Pathological Physiology, Centre of Experimental Medicine of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (CEM SAS) has been selected as the cover image of the prestigious international scientific journal Phytotherapy Research. The artwork was based on the scientific article “Redox Paradox of Polyphenols: Bioavailability, Hormesis, and Safety Concerns”, authored by Stanislava Vranková, Martina Cebová, Jana Klimentová, and Oľga Pecháňová from the same institute.
Selection for the journal cover is a special distinction awarded by the editorial board. Chosen from among several competing designs, the cover image represents the entire issue and highlights research that the editors consider particularly timely and scientifically significant.
“The published article addresses the so-called redox paradox of polyphenols, which are among the most extensively studied natural bioactive compounds and have traditionally been associated mainly with antioxidant effects. However, current knowledge shows that their biological activity is far more complex. Despite their low bioavailability and often very low concentrations in tissues, polyphenols can significantly influence cellular signalling and the body’s adaptive mechanisms,” explains Oľga Pecháňová.
In their review, the authors summarise current knowledge on the bioavailability and metabolism of polyphenols, as well as their role in maintaining redox homeostasis. Particular attention is given to the concept of hormesis, according to which low levels of mild stress activate the body’s protective mechanisms, increasing cellular resistance to subsequent damage. The ability of polyphenols to trigger these adaptive responses may be a key explanation for their health-promoting effects.
The article also emphasises that polyphenols should not automatically be regarded as universally beneficial. At high doses or when used inappropriately, they may exhibit pro-oxidant effects and pose potential safety risks. By offering a balanced assessment of both the benefits and limitations of polyphenols, the study makes an important contribution to the ongoing discussion on their role in the prevention and supportive treatment of chronic diseases.
The paper was published in one of the world’s leading journals dedicated to research on natural compounds, pharmacology, and the translation of experimental findings into clinical practice. The selection of the cover image by Phytotherapy Research recognises not only the creative visual presentation of the topic but also the scientific excellence and relevance of the research carried out at the Centre of Experimental Medicine of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
