EASAC Celebrates 25 Years
The European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC), which brings together the national science academies of the EU Member States, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Since 2001, EASAC has provided independent, evidence-based scientific advice to European institutions across areas such as climate change, energy, biodiversity protection, and public health. The Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) is an active member of EASAC and thus contributes to a common voice for European science.
EASAC President Lise Øvreås emphasised the growing importance of reliable scientific advice: “In times of disinformation, polarisation, and the increasing complexity of global challenges, a common voice for European science is more important than ever.”
Over the past quarter-century, EASAC has published more than 100 reports and statements that have helped shape European policies. In 2026, the organisation is preparing a series of events to mark its anniversary. In September, it will present a joint report with the Federation of European Academies of Medicine (FEAM) on the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
Heinz Faßmann, President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which hosts the EASAC Secretariat in Vienna, praised the organisation’s long-standing efforts: “In an era of fear and denial, defending scientific evidence is an act of courage. EASAC has been demonstrating this courage for 25 years.”
