Since 2020, the Slovak National Corpus (SNC) Department at the Ľudovít Štúr Institute of Linguistics, Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS), has been producing and publishing instructional videos that guide users through working with the Slovak National Corpus databases. These videos introduce the various corpora developed by SNC and provide practical tutorials on how to search them. Recently, the department has released a new instructional video – the first in the series Corpus and Translation.

In 2024, the SNC team launched a specialized video series titled Corpus and School Practice. These tutorials focused on how teachers could use resources from the Slovak National Corpus to design language exercises and activities that enrich Slovak language teaching. After the positive reception of this initiative, the department decided to create another dedicated series: Corpus and Translation. This new series is aimed at translators, teachers, students, and anyone interested in translation. It demonstrates how to use parallel corpora and highlights the possibilities of easily searching for translation equivalents. The author of the first video in the new series, Adriána Žáková, explains: “The goal of the series is to present work with parallel corpora and to showcase the functions and search options available in databases of translated texts.”

The first episode in Corpus and Translation, titled ‘Translating breathtaking as dychberúci?’. Find out more in the Slovak-English parallel corpus, serves as a tutorial on how to look up translation equivalents of the word breathtaking in the Slovak-English parallel corpus and verify whether ‘dychberúci’ is indeed an appropriate translation.
