The President of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini, today appointed Martin Venhart as President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS). He will lead Slovakia’s largest research institution for the next four years. His priorities include supporting top-level, particularly basic but also applied research, developing leadership training programs in science, and above all, strengthening public trust in the institution, which has long been a source of reliable information and a contributor to improving quality of life through research and new technologies.

"In this role, I aim to continue the trends established at SAS by the outgoing President, Professor Pavol Šajgalík. In 2022, our organizations were formally transformed into public research institutions. However, we still face a long road toward achieving full practical transformation in a way that will allow us to fully develop collaborations with industry and the business sector, as well as with the decision-making sphere and local governments. We can look to excellent examples from around the world of successful countries that have managed to connect their academies with these pillars," said Martin Venhart, President of SAS.

Nuclear physicist Mgr. Martin Venhart, DrSc., focuses on studying the shapes of atomic nuclei. In 2011, he proposed the first Slovak experiment at CERN on the ISOLDE accelerator. He subsequently led a team from the Slovak Academy of Sciences that built the TATRA spectrometer for this purpose. He has also studied deformed nuclear structures in gold nuclei at the cyclotron laboratories of the University of Jyväskylä in Finland and has worked in South Africa. His home institution is the Institute of Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. In 2017, he was elected to the SAS Presidium, and in 2021, he became SAS Vice-President for Division 1 of Sciences.

Martin Venhart was elected President of SAS by the SAS Assembly in a secret ballot on 19 November 2024. He will serve in this role from 6 June 2025 to June 2029.

Martina Venharta zvolil do funkcie predsedu Snem SAV 19. novembra 2024 v tajnom hlasovaní. Svoju funkciu bude zastávať od 6. júna 2025 do júna 2029.
