2024 SAS INTERNATIONAL PRIZE FOR PROFESSOR MIROSLAV ZEMAN
On Tuesday, September 24, 2024, in the Hall of Mirrors of Primate's Palace in Bratislava, Professor Miroslav Zeman from Delft University of Technology received the International Prize for the field of technical sciences from the SAS President and the Chair of Scientific Council of SAS, Pavol Šajgalík.
Representatives of embassies, state institutions, members of the SAS Presidium, the SAS Assembly and other representatives of scientific and social life attended the ceremony.
The laudation was delivered by the Vice-President for Science, Research and Innovations, Professor Peter Samuely, who highlighted M. Zeman's relationship with Slovakia, the place he comes from and where he completed his university studies. "Professor Miroslav Zeman belongs to top scientific capacities in the field of technical sciences. He is a top expert in photovoltaics as a renewable energy source and a recognized university professor at Delft University of Technology," stated the SAS Vice-President. In 2006, Professor M. Zeman founded the Slovak Renewable Energy Agency, which supports the implementation of solar energy in Slovakia.
When receiving the award, Professor Zeman emphasized that he greatly appreciated the prize he received. He reminded the audience that he received the SAS International Prize just a few steps from the place where he received his basic education. Professor Zeman has been working in the Netherlands since 1990 at the renowned Delft University of Technology, where he was appointed full professor in 2009. At the university, he teaches at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science and heads the Department of Sustainable Electricity. From the beginning of his work at Delft University of Technology, he has been a member of a group of scientists who researched solar cells.
He introduced himself to the audience in the Hall of Mirrors with the lecture "Dare to change energy / Our shared obligation", in which he summarized the goals of his research and highlighted his message addressed to current and future generations.

Professor Miroslav Zeman is a holder of the Order of the Netherlands Lion (Knight), which was awarded to him by King William Alexander in 2019, and the 2nd Class Ľudovít Štúr Order for extraordinary merits for the development of the Slovak Republic in science and technology, as well as for spreading the good name of Slovakia abroad. President Zuzana Čaputová awarded Professor Zeman a state award on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Slovak Republic. The Embassy of the Slovak Republic in The Hague proposed Professor Zeman for the SAS International Prize.
