About article:
The paper brings an overview of the state-of-the-art in soil water erosion modelling with a focus on physically-based models. Raster-based geographic information systems (GIS) are the most appropriate for distributed modelling. GIS tools can be applied in all stages of the soil erosion project but one of their most important advantages are possibilities of considering spatial and temporal patterns of erosion/deposition processes. Basic characteristics of empirical and physically-based erosion models are discussed. Data sources used for deriving model input parameters are identified and evaluated, namely topographic and thematic maps, field measurements/mapping and remote sensing. Attention is also given to erosion modelling activities in Slovakia.
