The article deals with the environmentally oriented research provided in the Slovak geography and landscape ecology with a special emphasis on the Institute of Geography SAS. Such kind of research started in Slovakia in mid 1970-ies and is related to names like Emil Mazúr, Ján Urbánek and Ján Drdoš. Step by step it has been developed as well as differentiated to several research streams: from theoretical studies, through the investigation of global, macro-regional, national, regional, and local environmental problems, following natural risks and hazards investigations, strategic environment assessment, environmental planning and policy to questions of perception and values of the environment as well as the understanding of the environmental quality as an important component of the sustainability and quality of life. Individual research streams as well as selected results are introduced in the article. Finally, the author thinks about perspectives of such kind of research at the Institute of Geography SAS.
