About article:
This article analyzes the role of literary-theoretical thinking about world literature in the ideology of Slovak Romantic nationalism. According to Ľudovít Štúr (1815–1856), the leader of the Slovak national revival movement, the contribution and value of the Slavs was to be determined by literature: in the future, the Slavs were to produce what Goethe understood as “world literature”. Based on his analysis of Slavic folklore, Štúr attempted to define what belonged to this literature and what did not. His reflections represent a unique model of national identity based on the creation of a world literature. The concluding section of the article addresses the question of the possibility of consciously creating world literature.
