About article:
The article deals with words used in Slovak dialects to describe the internal structures of wood visible on a cross-section of a tree trunk. It points out the connections between the names of the calendar year (rok, leto) and the names of the annual growth of the trunk (roky, letá, rokoviny). Also interesting are the words used in Slovak dialects, which refer to the darker layer of lignified cells (jadro) and the non-lignified cells that differ in colour and shape (stržeň). We are presenting a part of previously unpublished material obtained during research for the Atlas of the Slovak Language, specifically the question focused on the name for the “fleshy centre of a tree trunk (stržeň)”. In this section, we concentrate on words that are semantically related to its central position.
