About article:
The paper deals with a special kind of formations which are referred to as associative plurals in the theoretical studies. the article focuses on lexical and semantic constraints on associative plurals in Slovak. Associative plurals are derivatives which consist of a motivating noun X (typically of human reference, usually a person’s name or a kin term) and a dedicated sufix -ovci which have the meaning ‘X and other people associated with X’, instantiating the metonymic model called paragon-metonymy (IDEAL MEMBER of CATHEGORY for WHOLE CATHEGORY). The analysis shows how associative plurals can be differentiated from collective plurals and similative plurals on one hand and from nouns expressing affiliation on the basis of two features: referential heterogeneity and reference to groups. Corpus data show that it is contextual underspecification which blurs the boundaries among individual subgroups of formations with identical marker which may cause orthographic problems concerning writing initial capital letter in these nouns.
