About article:
In the present text, the author attempts to analyse certain passages from Rousseau’s epistolary novel Julie, ou La Nouvelle Héloïse (1761) against the background of specific features of the epistolary genre. He discloses several particular ways in which literary writing, especially in the first parts of the novel, “mimics” the affective disorder that seems to reign in the stormy relationship between the two key characters, Julia and Saint-Preux. In the following parts of Rousseau’s novel, the characters strive to replace this disordered affectivity by a “sublimated” form of friendship. The effort, however, proves to be unsuccessful.
