About article:
This article highlights the urgency of implementing literary studies (Literaturwissenschaft) as life knowledge and as knowledge for living. In the context of the ongoing crisis of literary studies in the Western world, it stresses the need to fight against the reduction of “life” and “forms of life” to medical and bio-technological aspects. Starting from Erich Auerbach’ s Mimesis and his theory of literature as a representation of reality, the article develops the idea of literature as an aesthetic representation of lived reality and of the possibilities to understand the literatures of the world as artistic expressions of the forms and norms of life and conviviality on this planet.
