This article examines the evolution through time of people's ideas about the future. It begins with concepts of recurring historical cycles, and continues with the change brought about by the transition to Christianity, when historical time became direct, linear and irreversible. This time had a distinct eschatological character, which later inspired the philosophy of history – during the Enlightenment – replacing the perspective of salvation with the idea of human progress. In the late 19th century the idea of an open future was born, while by the late 20th century the idea of universal progress had been largely abandoned. A symptomatic phenomenon of the postmodern era is presentism, a focus on the present. The essay concludes by stating that although an open future cannot fully be predicted, this does not absolve us from the task of attempting it.
