About article:
The aim of this study is to identify and analyse low-income communes in Slovakia. The basic means for such identification is an indirect method, which uses characteristics of differentiated income levels based on occurrence of observed risk subcategories in order to identify territories with low-income population. Relevant statistical data about household income from Microcensus 2002 and the 2001 Census of Population and Housing data are used for this identification. Such data are available for all communes in the country. Based on the summarized “risk” values, 269 of the total 2 883 communes in Slovakia are identified as communes with low income. Although this share of communes with extremely low income represents only 9.3 %, the obtained results also indicate that the population’s income is low in the prevailing part of the communes. The identified communes are situated in marginal territory of southern and eastern Slovakia.
