Aktualizácia vymedzenia funkčných regiónov Slovenska: hierarchia, neurčitosť a využiteľnosť

The paper builds on previous definitions of functional regions of Slovakia. It uses data on commuting among municipalities from the 2021 census. It employs a widely ac-cepted regionalisation algorithm of the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies, updated by the Olomouc school of quantitative geographers. For the first time, the same algorithm is used for the territory of Slovakia to define two different hierarchical levels: micro-regions and meso-regions. The meso-regional level can serve as the basis for the evaluation or correction of the delimitation of higher territo-rial units (regional self-government). The paper also includes an assessment of the spatial uncertainty of the delineation of functional regions through the fuzzy index. For possible spatial analyses, the paper includes the definition of the so-called approx-imated functional regions, which are not composed of municipalities but they are aggregations of districts. The results confirm the temporal continuity of functional region boundaries in the dissected mountainous areas and small changes in the territo-ries in the geomorphologically less dissected areas and in the wider metropolitan re-gion of Bratislava.
