About article:
The subject of this study is a confrontational analysis of the phonological system of the contemporary standard Slovak and Polish languages from a typological point of view. Polish as a language with the consonantal correlation of softness in which hard and soft opposites in the majority of articulation types are distinguished consists of the relatively rich list of consonants (31) and an ordinary system of vocals (6). The Slovak language represents an intermediate type between an extreme consonantal type and an extreme vocal type for its quite balanced proportion of vocals (14) and consonants (27). It is related to the fact that Slovak belongs to the languages in which prosodic (quantity) and principal, inherant distinctive features of phonemes apply while in Polish language only inherant phonological atrributes apply. Quantity in Polish perished and primal quantitative opposites were reassesed as quality opposites (a parallel development happened also in dialects of Eastern Slovakia). Neither the stress which is unchangeable and fixed to the penult stands in the Polish phonology. This study also establishes questions related to a new description of the phonological system of the Polish language in which, in comparison with a traditional description and valuation of some contraversial cases, new solutions are introduced.
