About article:
Spatial variations of the COVID-19 pandemic include localities of high infection and death rates and localities affected to a lesser extent by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Likewise, the geographical impacts of the social and economic stagnation resulting from introduced lockdowns to curb the spread of COVID-19 vary depending on territorial patterns of infection or death rates. The differentiated intensity of business disruption due to anti-epidemic measures and the diversity of regional socio-economic characteristics forms the asymmetry of regional impacts and consequences of the pandemic. The aim of this paper is to identify the vulnerable regions of Slovakia in terms of the four sectors most affected by the pandemic (i.e., wholesale and retail trade, accommodation and food services, arts, entertainment and recreation, administrative and support services). The vulnerability of the regions was assessed based on two sensitivity characteristics of the regions. The first characteristic concerns the representation of the regional share of companies, and the second represents the share of regional employment in the vulnerable sectors. The identification of the partial vulnerability of the districts from the aspect of each vulnerable sector was performed using a standardised distribution of values. The ranking method was chosen to identify the overall number of vulnerable districts. Twenty (out of 79) vulnerable districts were identified in Slovakia in 2020. The results showed that the vulnerable districts form two continuous macro-regions and four separate districts. The larger macro-region consisted of 10 vulnerable districts located in the northern part of Slovakia. Therefore, the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in high-vulnerable districts represent an opportunity to reconsider the transformation of these regions by diversifying the regional structure of the economy to make them more resilient to future (not only health) global crises.
