About article:
This essay deals with the issue of abortion laws in Poland. Since 2020, directly after the judicial tightening of the possibility of an abortion, public protests have taken place in the neighbouring country in which not only women were involved. The situation escalated even more after the death of young Polish woman Isabella, who tragically died after receiving medical care from hospital staff in November last year. Ending her pregnancy could save her life, but by law, present doctors were obliged to wait a certain amount of time until the death of the fetus. Unfortunately, this case is not the first occurrence of a similar situation in Poland. Protests were organized not only in Poland but also in the Czech Republic and all over the world, where they sparked strong reactions and debates. The Czech media did not fail to inform about this event, which, however, produced a number of positive and negative reactions, official statements, efforts to help, and also a hostile attitude. This article will focus on official legislation and the definition of abortion in Polish and Czech law. It will consider comments made on abortion laws and statements by president Miloš Zeman, the Ministry of Health, or representatives of Czech political parties. This essay will also present the possibilities of terminating a pregnancy in the Czech Republic, rules and procedures for people living in the EU, and the possibilities of helping Polish women, which are offered here. By what standards (not only in the Czech Republic) is a human considered a living being? Is it necessary for a person carrying a child to be in a direct line of danger if they consider ending their pregnancy artificially? Who creates the rules for the bodies of women? Where is the line of arbitrary rules created by society met with law, the concept of morality, and religion crossed?  The sources of this essay consist of professional peer-reviewed literature, legislation, Internet resources, as well as numerous arguments made regarding this topic.
