About article:
The submitted study analyses meteorological causes of the rise of avalanches in the region of the West Carpathians situated prevailingly in the territory of Czechoslovakia. The evaluation expresses both relationship between certain synoptic situation and avalanche forming and percentage expression of avalanche occurrence related to the individual meteorological elements. While at the dynamic-climatic evaluation supported by the Catalogue of Weather Situations in the Territory of the ČSSR, we have employed 10 cyclonic and 9 anticyclonic weather situations, in evaluating relationship between the individual meteorological elements and avalanche formation we have used results of measurements of snow precipitation intensity, wind acting, air temperature and solar radiation. The mentioned data have been adopted from the meteorological station on the Chopok (2009 m above sea level) in the Nízke Tatry (Low Tatra) Mountains. In total, 658 avalanches have been evaluated, those being registered in the individual montane regions for a period 1973 to 1977. In 318 cases (49 per cent) they were slab avalanches, in 213 cases (32 per cent) ground ones and in 127 cases (19 per cent) loose-snow ones.
