About article:
The paper describes the fields and research approaches in human bioclimatology and focuses on the aggravation o£ stress factors in urban environments. An acute health and life risk exists with respect to heat waves and extreme smog episodes, especially for infirmed persons. The impact of smog episodes has, however, decreased m the past 20 years due to air quality improvements. A reliable assessment of chronic stresses needs much more sophisticated methods. Some new discomfort indexes (PMV = predicted mean vote, PET = physiologic equivalent temperature) have been developed which cover the complete heat exchange of man and which are of high physiologic relevance. Research deficiencies still to be overcome with regard to a sufficient monitoring and selection of representative air contaminants and a correlation of these data with more detailed morbidity and mortality inventories.
