Recent studies point to beneficial effects of various antioxidants, e.g. natural flavonoids, in cardiovascular system (CVS), including their protective effects against ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury of the heart or vascular functions. However, most studies were performed in young healthy animals what differs from clinical situation when patients with cardiovascular diseases are obviously ageing individuals suffering from various comorbidities including metabolic ones such as diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia or hypercholesterolemia. The aim of this work will be to investigate the effects of selected natural antioxidants (quercetin, epicatechin) on I/R injury of the heart, blood pressure and vascular functions in ageing individuals and in individuals with metabolic comorbidities - hypertriglyceridemia and diabetes II. type. Another aim of the work will be to reveal intracellular as well as intercellular mechanisms of action of these substances in the cardiovascular system in elderly and in individuals with metabolic comorbidities, including interactions of these mechanisms with mechanisms involved in the aging process and development of selected comorbidities.
