Abstract
This first English translation of the first Slovak novel by Jozef Ignác Bajza is published by Oxford University Studies in the Enlightenment. Edited by Dobrota Pucherová a Erika Brtáňová, the translation by David Short is accompanied by an extensive introduction, in-depth footnotes, images and two studies on the significance of Bazja’s work within a wider European context in the eighteenth century. The volume demonstrates that the rise of the novel in Europe was a contingent and discontinuous process, much more varied than the Anglocentric perspective would have it, and suggests directions towards a more inclusive history of the European novel.
