prof. PhDr. Ivan Gerát, PhD.
Ivan Gerát (1964), the senior researcher at the Institute of Art History, Art Research Centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava and professor of art history at the University of Trnava, completed his studies in art history, aesthetics, philosophy, and Slavonic studies at the university and the SAS in Bratislava, and the University of Freiburg, Germany (PhD.1994).His research focuses on medieval art in Central Europe, especially the hagiographic legends, the historiography and philosophical questions of art history and visual culture, iconology, and the theoretical problems of image interpretation. He maintains close contact with the contemporary art scene through his collaboration with the NOVUM Foundation.
He has held long-term scholarships at prestigious institutions abroad, including Princeton University, Clark Institute, University of Michigan, Herzog August Bibliothek, Geisteswissenschaftliches Zentrum für Geschichte und Kultur Ostmitteleuropas, the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe, and Philipps-Universität, and visiting professorships in Vienna (2020, 2022) and Brno (2023).
He has been repeatedly invited as an expert evaluator, working for the Research Executive Agency of the European Commission, and lectured at many prestigious institutions and published over a hundred articles in six languages and eight books, including in English, Legendary Scenes – An Essay in Medieval Pictorial Hagiography (VEDA 2014), and Iconology of Charity (Peeters 2020).
