ERC Starting Grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are starting their own independent research team or programme. Applicant Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal.
ERC Starting Grant Principal Investigator profile:
1. Shall have been awarded their first PhD at least 2 and up to 7 years prior to 1 January 2018.
2. Must have already shown the potential for research independence, for example by having produced at least one important publication as main author or without the participation of their PhD supervisor.
Grants may be awarded up to a maximum of EUR 1 500 000 for a period of 5 years
Evaluation criteria:
Scientific excellence is the sole criterion of evaluation. It will be applied in conjunction to the evaluation of both:
1. the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of the research project;
2. the intellectual capacity, creativity and commitment of the Principal Investigator.

ERC Synergy Grants are intended to enable minimum two to maximum four Principal Investigators and their teams to bring together complementary skills, knowledge, and resources in new ways, in order to jointly address ambitious research problems.
ERC Synergy Grant Principal Investigators profile:
1. Must demonstrate the synergies, complementarities and added value that could lead to breakthroughs that would not be possible by the individual Principal Investigators working alone.
2. Groups applying for the ERC Synergy Grant must be made up of a minimum of two and a maximum of four Principal Investigators and, as necessary, their teams. One of the Principal Investigators must be designated as the Corresponding Principal Investigator.
3. Principal Investigators are expected to be active researchers and must present an early achievement track-record or a 10-year track-record whichever is most appropriate for their career stage.
Synergy Grants may be awarded up to a maximum of EUR 10 000 000 for a period of 6 years.
