Contentious politics; (new) social movements; environmental movement; civil society; Slovakia

Contentious Politics and (Environmental) New Social Movements: Reflecting on the Relevant Categories of Analysis. Article introduces the conceptual categories of contentious politics which provide for relational and reflexive analysis of collective political action. Such categories of analysis contain necessary normative distance, which enables the inclusion of such phenomena that have not been analytically scrutinised by empirically exclusive and normatively charged conceptual categories of civil society and new social movements. Article also discusses selected aspects of environmental contention in Slovakia, focusing on the framing processes and interactions of the contested agendas and on their (de)politicizing potentials. Corporate farms; land rent; single area payment; Slovakia

What is the Future of Corporate Farms under the Conditions of Common Agricultural Policy? The newly emergent landowners in the 1990s left their land in the corporate farms due to the low level of farm profitability and the high risk in the general economic environment. The accession to the EU and the introduction of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Single Area Payment (SAP) could induce incentives to landowners to withdraw their land if they are not satisfied with the level of rent. The analysis in this paper, based on survey data, has indicated that, although the SAP might induce more landowners to ask for a rent increase, it is unlikely that they would massively withdraw their land from the corporate farms. However, financially constrained farms might quickly loose their capacity to compete for land in the conditions of an increased land demand. Sociológia 2008, Vol. 40 (No. 2: 127-140)

Max Weber; general sociology; Parsons; theory of action; sociology of race; social stratification theory

Interpretations of Max Weber in General Sociology. The article is concerned with interpretations of Max Weber in general sociology. It describes the “Parsonization” and the “de-Parsonization“ of Weber in the American sociological literature, interpretations in the theory of action, empirical sociology, the sociology of race as well as in the theory of social stratification. The influence of Weber on the rational choice theory and the „neo-charismatic“ theory of leadership are discussed. Two questions are asked: whether Weberianism can be an appropriate program for transition and whether history should dominate over sociology? Sociológia 2008, Vol. 40 (No. 2: 141-162)
