School Re-entry Under Socialism: Sponsored Mobility or a Second Chance? This paper analyzes the participation of vocational school graduates in further education in five former socialist countries between 1948 and 1989. Students in the vocational secondary schools were not acquiring complete secondary education equivalent to that offered in academic and professional high schools. Previous analyses have shown that many apprentices re-entered the system of secondary education and had a chance to attain a secondary-school leaving examination. The principal question I posit in this text is: who were the apprentices who re-entered school after completing their vocational training? Using event history analysis of a large survey data file (N=6010) I show that school re-entry played a dual role in educational stratification during socialism. It was a vehicle to educate communist cadres and, at the same time, it served as a second chance for members of the politically persecuted families. Sociológia 2007, Vol. 39 (No 2: 95-118)

Possibilities and Prospects for Solution of Rural Employment. The article deals with the prospects for a solution to rural employment in Slovakia. It defines rural space according to the OECD definition and outlines the starting points for a future strategy of solution to rural employment. It identifies the most important factors shaping the development of this area such as, for instance, pressures on labour mobility and labour productivity, demands for improvement of human capital, infrastructure facilities, restructuring and diversification of rural economy, and changes in demographic evolution. The outlined perspective of the solution consists indeed in two dimensions, i.e. the development of human resources and the increase in entrepreneurial and regional competitiveness. It argues that a continuation of the present situation sets up a danger of the persistence of dual economy and growing socially unacceptable differentiation, including the persistence of unequal opportunities for the population and entrepreneurial activities as well particularly in remote and economically underdeveloped regions. With regard to the significant regional disparities and reduced competitiveness of economically disadvantaged rural areas, it is necessary to solve this problem progressively and, in particular, systematically. Individual as a Model Category for Social Organization. The article examines individualism as a kind of social organization typical for modern societies. Although individualism is mostly analysed as an ideology or the methodological approach, author outlines how the individual becomes a model category for social institutions and processes. Contrary to the ideological expectations the individual did not prove to be an appropriate category for social organization and that is why the sociological theory of individualism is needed. The main problem of social individualism resides in misunderstanding of social elements and its functions, and consequently also in realization of individual’s sociality. These misunderstandings cause the apparent paradoxes, or dual face of contemporary individualism, which represents e. g. phenomena of conformity, uncertainty, ambiguity and social exclusion. Rethinking individualism requires rethinking of principles of creating social groups and institutions. The central quality of social groups became collectiveness as a result of individualistic constructive processes and institutionalisation of egalitarianism. Individualistic social organization represents specific kind of social structure and processes. Sociológia 2007, Vol. 39 (No. 2: 136-160)
