drug law offences; decriminalization; depenalization; alternative sanctions; restorative justice

This study aims to map the alternative sanctions for drug law offences that are available under Slovak law and describe the use of these sanctions in practice. A drug policy development analysis and a discussion about the effectiveness of drug law enforcement is included. Attention is paid to the model of restorative justice as an alternative to the classic model of criminal justice – the retributive model. This study is based on complementary quantitative data (statistics) and qualitative data (10 expert interviews). According to our findings, the low rate of applications of alternative sanctions for drug law offences is connected with the responsible institutions' lack of competence in applying them, experts' mistrust in alternative sanctions and restorative justice, as well as the preference of public opinion for retributive law enforcement for drug law offences.

Civic participation, participatory democracy, liberal democracy, e-democracy

. The rapidly changing European political environment poses a big challenge not only to elected representatives but also to scholars. In the paper, I elucidate the theoretical approaches to civic participation. Consequently, a theory of participatory democracy, which is heavily neglected in the Slovak academia, is presented through the prism of Carole Pateman’s, C.B. Macpherson’s and Benjamin Barber’s writings. Their ideas on civic engagement in public life appear to be noteworthy again, especially in the light of the changing conditions of democratic citizenship – particularly in regards to the EU-wide decline in voter turnout, increasing income inequality, downgrade of social solidarity and cooperation, growing intolerance or dissatisfaction with representative democracy.

This study is focused on the topic of social roles and concepts associated with it. It concerns the thematic and paradigmatic contexts in which the concept of social roles appeared and what perspectives it has opened in sociology. Special attention is paid to Dahrendorf´s book Homo Sociologicus, to the questions raised by this work, and how answers to them have been sought. The study goes on to explain how during the 70's and 80's the interest of sociologists moved from the topic of roles to the issue of social actors. In conclusion it considers why today it could be helpful to go back to the concept of social roles and how lines of reasoning on this issue could be promising and beneficial for the further development of sociological theory.
