agricultural landscape, land cover, extensification, abandonment, Slovakia

Political changes after 1989 followed by the accession of the Central and Eastern European countries to the EU was accompanied by many socio-economic processes with direct or indirect effects on agricultural landscapes. The aim of this study was to investigate the consequences of transformation of socialist cooperative farming into open market cooperative farming. Land cover mapping obtained from photointerpretation of aerial photographs and orthophotomaps was used to quantify land cover changes that took place between 1986 and 2009. As a case study, a rural region with heterogeneous natural conditions situated in western Slovakia was chosen. Through the analysis of land cover changes, agricultural land modification was assessed at the local scale. A significant part of the permanent grasslands changed into shrub and forest associations during the researched period. These findings were discussed with local farmers and the landowners. Although the main phase of abandonment of grasslands occurred during the 1990s, the recent status heavily depends on the EU subsidies applicable to the less favoured area (LFA) scheme. Smaller meadows will most probably disappear due to technical difficulties connected with their management.

time-geography, behavioural patterns, time-space budget, marginal mountainous rural environment, Lom nad Rimavicou

The aim of the paper is to present the results of research focused on time-space behavioural patterns of inhabitants living in the marginal mountainous rural municipality of Lom nad Rimavicou in Central Slovakia. It builds on principles conceived by behavioural geography applying several time-geographical concepts. The results of the analysis are embedded in the context of political, economic, socio-cultural and environmental changes in the period of transition of Slovak society after 1989. The knowledge concerning the time-space behaviour of the local population in the marginal mountainous rural milieu at the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century is based on time-space budget survey conducted by the authors of this study in 2011, while some aspects are compared with the results of preceding research (1986 and 1997). Analysis of the time-space records presented in this paper, provide a complicated picture of human activities in pursuit of real satisfaction of their needs on a daily basis. Such a picture offers interesting information in terms of the assessment and comprehension of the processes taking place in the transitional society.

criterion, data approximation, functional urban regions, urban systems, internal structure

The main goal of this paper is to present methods on identification of the internal structure of functional urban regions in Slovakia. Although the major concept of functional urban regions is quite popular in Slovakia, the issue of internal structure has not yet been introduced. Therefore the methods used in foreign literature are introduced in this paper and the possibilities for their application in the Slovak system are discussed. Since some problems in data accessibility are expected, a particular part is involved with the possible data replacement and approximation. Finally, a set of criteria for probable further identification is introduced and well discussed.

human resources, demographic indicators, regional development, Czech Republic

After 1989 social and political transformation was accompanied by change in the demographic behaviour of the population in the Czech Republic. New regional imbalances emerged as a result of the transition from the centrally planned economy to a market economy followed by the disparities in the quality of human resources. These facts were the impetus for the implementation of the presented analysis and it stimulated interest in empirical research, which is able to compare the quality of human resources in districts of the Czech Republic in a broader context. The main aim of this research was to spatially differentiate the selected districts of the Czech Republic based on the quality of human resources. Cluster analysis was used in the evaluation and comparison of demographic indicators in the districts. Although at first glance the demographic situation in the Czech Republic might seem relatively compact, cluster analysis showed that there are quite significant regional or district differences. These disparities are mainly derived from the differences in the development of the economic base, geographical location and previous demographic trends with effects that are currently fading away.

territorial identity, natural symbols, regional development, profoundly changed landscape, north-western Bohemia

This paper deals with the natural potential for the formation of territorial identity in the Karlovy Vary, Ústí nad Labem, and Liberec regions of Czechia (regional self-governing units). The main objective is to contribute to the discussion about the importance of nature and landscape (natural symbols) in forming the sense of belonging to regions on various levels, specifically to assess the differentiation of natural symbolism of the regions in perception of a representative sample of the Czech population (the survey conducted by Public Opinion Research Centre – CVVM). The obtained data are compared with the analysis of inclusion of specific landscape elements in the formation of the spatial and symbolic shape of regions. Simultaneously, utilization of natural localities in creating the external image of the region at regional and national levels are monitored in a positive sense (the use of natural resources to increase interest in the region, compared to the intensity of nature and landscape conservation by the regional institutions) and also in a negative sense (the impact of nature and landscape damage on the perception of the regions). The survey confirmed that the natural potential plays an important role in the process of forming territorial identity in the studied areas. The data demonstrate territorial differentiation in perception of the natural heritage and landscape that is positive as well as negative. However, the difference in perception of regions regarding spatial proximity was not identified.

Adonis vernalis L., population dynamics, insolation, ecological amplitude, National Nature Reserve of Devínska Kobyla

The population dynamics of plant species in time and space depends on the relationships between a plant and its natural environment. Protection of endangered plant species also depends on the knowledge of the population dynamics of species taking into account their site conditions. Adonis vernalis L. is a perennial plant and one of the representative spring species in the National Nature Reserve of Devínska Kobyla. The direct observation of the plant population was carried out during six periods. Staking out a grid with three hundred permanent 1m x 1m plots enabled detailed research. Following the digital terrain modelling and calculation of insolation together with consideration of soil and climatic characteristics allowed assessment of the trends in population dynamics of Adonis vernalis L. depending on site conditions.
