Epistemology and the Division of Quantitative and Qualitative Sociology. The article summarizes the evolution of modern epistemology and relates it to sociology. It has two goals: 1) to pursue the way the formation of naturalistic and hermeneutic stream of epistemology resonates in the division of sociology into quantitative and qualitative; 2) to show consequences of the recent epistemological debate for this division of sociology. The concept of hermeneutical circle is used in the article to highlight that the knowledge of any social scientist is conditioned personally, historically and intersubjectively. This can foster the respect towards the plurality of explanation and understanding processes. On the other hand, explanation and understanding are not to be put against each other. They represent two in-terdependent treats of human thinking. Sociológia 2014, Vol. 46 (No. 4: 351-372)

Czech presidential election; election campaign; recall; electoral behavior

Memory and Voting in Highly Personalized Elections: Case Study of the First Direct Presidential Elections in Czech Republic. We analyze the memory of voters and their ability to recall campaigns of candidates after the first-ever direct Czech presidential election. Our main focus is on identifying the campaigns best remembered by the voters. Our results show that, as predicted by the theory, the respondents could recall campaigns of the personalities that they had voted for. On the other hand, we do not confirm that people also remembered the campaigns of the candidates that they considered voting for. Sociológia 2014, Vol. 46 (No. 4: 373-392)

A Critical View on Securitization Discourse in Migration Studies. Securitization discourse on migration became one of the leading perspectives of the interpretation in political science how the national state has been dealing with the high numbers of immigrants in the last two decades. It views immigration as a threat to the nation-state because of inflow of unknown or unrecognised. This article's main contribution is a systematic discussion on migration policies reflected by social theorists with a special attention paid to the concept of security in migration theory. Inspired by post-structuralist approach, author argues that migration theories became highly influenced by public and media discourse that reproduce knowledge on dominant social groups in the nation-state. Active Border and the Europeanisation of Public Sphere. How Being the Same as and at the Same Time Different from. This paper suggests that Europeans need to treat both territorial and symbolic borders as specific cultural forms which enable to exercise and practise cross border communication. Such communication should allow for a better understanding of differences rather than constructing and perpetuating them. The notion of active border is introduced as a nexus of the Europeanization of public spheres and identities. Active border is interpreted as a border which supports and produces both public criticism and social integration without generating antagonism towards those from “over borders”. Contrary to active border, passive border entrenches stereotypical negative identities, cognitive foreclosures, and creates a significant hindrance in positive identities formation. The concept of active border contributes to the broad sociological context of Europeanization and trans/national public spheres and identities formations in which questions about cultural change and plurality should be discussed and in which the concept of active border offers the novel interpretative perspective. Among others, the paper draws inspiration from Edwards Shils’ typology of collective identities, Erik Erikson’s concept of identity formation, Gerard Delanty typology of cultural encounters. Changes of the Way of Life in Hlučín Micro-Region. The article shows the basic trends in the changes of the way of life of people in the Hlučínsko micro-region. The way of life has been defined as a set of rules orienting individual‘s behavior in events of one's life. A specific tool was designed for the analysis of the modernization of the way of life. The source of the changes of the way of life is the effort of the inovators to fulfill their authentic needs. Giddens` theory of double structuration is used as an explanation of the specific processes of transformation of the way of life allowing to highlight the role of reflexivity in the transformation of the rules of the way of life. Guided by the principles of the explanatory frame, the empirical analysis has shown the most important processes of modernization of the way of life in Hlučín mikro-region.
