analytical sociology; social mechanism; causality; explanation; mecha¬nism of social control process

Analytical Sociology: Some Methodological Inspirations. In the article, the fundamental principles of analytical sociology are briefly introduced. As underlined, the contemporary analytical sociology based on social mechanism concept is closely connected to multiagent (or agent-based) modeling. Three methodological inspirations which can be found in contemporary analytical sociology are discussed. The first one is dealing with Merton´s interpretation of Middle range theory. According to Hedström and Udehn, there are two basic dimensions of MRT: dimension of generality (explanandum) and dimension of isolation (explanans). In the next part, the model construction of theory is discussed and compared to the strategy of hypothetico-deductive theory construction. Finally, the issue of explanation based upon social mechanism is analyzed. There are two fundamental approaches to solve the issue which can be found in the analytical sociology. Bunge´s approach (How does it work?) is compared to Boudon´s one (Why does it work?). The social mechanism underlying the social control process is introduced to demonstrate the idea that the answer to the question “how does it work?” can provide a non-trivial though not final explanation of social phenomena. class; status; social stratification; Slovak society

On some Issues of Class and Status in Slovak Society. Starting point in this article is Max Weber´s distinction between class and status as related but different forms of social stratification. John H. Goldthorpe argued that this distinction is not only conceptually cogent, but empirically important as well: class and status do have distinct explanatory power when it comes to studying varying areas of social life − economic security and prospects are stratified more by class than by status, while the opposite is true for outcomes in the domains of cultural consumption and political attitudes. Our research ascertained that distinction between class and status is empirically important in Slovak stratification as well, but there are not empirical evidence for assertion that varying areas of social life are stratified more by class or by status. Acts of Crime as a Modality of Social Action. Knowledge on social causality of crime has become a key theoretical orientation in criminology. It is represented by an aetiological paradigm. Despite of long-time efforts of the criminological aetiological studies, criminology lacks coherent theoretical base to interpret social causal mechanisms. Over the last years we can identify some ways of knowledge integration, including increasing tendency to multilevel integration. The study presents and discusses some approaches to integration of sociological knowledge on social determination of crime acts. The contribution emphasizes model of social action as a base framework for explanation. However, classic sociological modes of interpretation of social action are reformulated in context of social and cultural changes of late modernity. We can observe a shift to significance of human agency. Social action is more motivated, more reflexive. Up to the author, the base for the conceptualisation of social determination of crime is understanding of sociability and social responsibility in recent social conditions. As a conceptual frame of sociability is considered a mechanism of social attachment of social actor. This mechanism has bi-directional dimensions: social inclusion (from the social actor to their social context) and social acceptation (from social context to the social actor). Socio-Economic Inequalities in Health: Socio-Economic Status as a Determinant of Health. The paper focuses on socio-economic inequalities in health. It presents theoretical and methodological conceptualization of socio-economic determinants’ effect on health and tests effects of specific indicators of socio-economic status. It employs the indicators that are not often used in the health analysis – EGP class scheme and Top-Bottom self-placement scale. Strategy of empirical analysis is based on building of binary logistic models. They confirm the role of the EGP class scheme and the subjective identification of social position as important predictors of self-rated health and health measured in terms of presence of chronic illness.
