urban encroachment, sprawl, urban fringe, demography, agricultural land use, migration, rural transformation, socio-economic change, north India

This paper concerns the impacts of the phenomena of urban encroachment on agricultural land for urban purposes in the fringe areas of Aligarh city located in the plains of north India. In reality, it is a consequential phenomenon of urbanization characterized with predominance of non-agricultural pursuits, high density of population; fast pace of life, availability of improved civic amenities and affluences. The rapid land use and socio-economic changes in this transitional and sub-urban system often puzzled researchers in urban geography. The research work involves simulation and analysis of secondary as well as primary imperative data and information. The research aim of the study is to generate possible scenarios of physical and socio-cultural advancement. As a result, the city spreads out continuously over large areas, and the process of inclusion of rural lands continues to far and wide areas, for the use of urban activities and rural transformation. The paper analyses the data pertaining to demographic indicators like population, density, sex ratio, literacy and occupational structure, and agricultural land utilization, and ratio of agricultural and non-agricultural land use in the development blocks forming the urban fringe and sampled villages in the surroundings of Aligarh city. The data is computed and described with the help of percentages and statistical diagrams and maps. Thus, the results obtained prove the agreement that urban encroachment on agricultural lands has direct impact on socio-economic and spatial base of the urban rural fringe.

cross-border cooperation, Euroregion, regional identity, border effect, Schengen, European Union Funds, European regionalism, districts of Pracha-tice and Freyung-Grafenau

The aim of this study is to evaluate the development of cross-border cooperation in the Prachatice district of the Czech Republic and the Freyung-Grafenau district in Germany after the year 1989. In pursuit of the given aim of the work the following hypotheses were formulated: The most important participants in cross-border cooperation are the secretaries of the Euroregions, more than the activities of clubs and interest groups. The intensity of cross-border cooperation is territorially differentiated. The theoretical introduction confronts the paradigms of a border, border effects, a border region, and regional identity. The survey and verification of the relationship development was carried out on the basis of a prepared questionnaire given to the representatives of the towns and villages, the mayors of the Prachatice and Freyung-Grafenau districts. Consequently some of these results were compared and contrasted with the results of research on the borderlands, which was conducted in 2004. On the basis of the survey it became obvious that the institution of the Euroregion and its mission differs in some segments on the Czech and German sides.

historical settlement regions, spatial autocorrelation, local indicators, Getis-Ord statistics, first written mention of municipalities, region Orava

In this article, spatial autocorrelation and its selected local indicators are discussed, while the indicator of the first written mention concerning municipalities of the Slovak Republic is particularly studied. Knowledge and interpretation of this phenomenon represents an initial precondition of an extensive analysis and application of spatial autocorrelation in research as well. In the empirical part of this paper the overall benefit of the method used in geographical research by application of the first written mention of a municipality along with the aim of identifying historically settled regions of Slovakia will be emphasized. In order to understand the identified historical regions, an insight into the issue of historical stages of the settlement development of Slovakia was necessary. An attempt was made to substantiate the arguments and knowledge with research results reached in this field.

regional disparities, criteria, socio-economic indicators, classification, attributes

Identification and measurement of regional disparities (RD) are decisive factors in the search for solutions to perceived regional inequality. The selection of correct and relevant indicators has a key role in the identification and measurement of RD. The aim of this paper is to present the knowledge concerning the identification and measurement of RD with emphasis on the broader theoretical and systemic foundations for the selection of indicators. A wide range of the most important and most often used RD assessment indicators based on a basic systemic classification of regional disparities will also be presented. Relevant indicators of a socio-economic nature are classified on the basis of results of meta-analysis of more than fifty reliable studies of the issue in question accompanied by their definitions and brief characteristics. Advantages, drawbacks, nuances and specific features are presented by mean of a general analysis of their different aspects.
