urban change, Bratislava, intra-urban structure analysis, urban environment perception, sustainable development

This paper aims to provide a basic picture of changing intra-urban structure of Bratislava in the transitional period of the 1990s, and its perception. The most significant processes contributing to the changes in the intra-urban structure in the five zones within the city (historical core, inner city, villa neighbourhood, housing estates, and the periphery) are briefly presented. The basic features in the perception of transformational changes by urban dwellers (university students) are identified and "the images of transformational changes" are discussed. The challenges posed by urban development, and its perception are summarized. Key words: urban change, Bratislava, intra-urban structure analysis, urban environment perception, sustainable development

natural gas, energy system, sustainable development, Slovakia

The aim of the paper is to evaluate the present role of natural gas in the energy system of Slovakia and its potential contribution to sustainable development of energetics in the context of regional development. Natural gas will presumably be the main energy source in transition from use of not renewable to renewably energy sources. Natural gas as an exhaustible resource is not sustainable. With regard to the possibility of its application in small facilities, gasification helps regional development and represents a stimulus and determining factor for location of additional economic activities and increase of the population's life quality.

regional hydrogeography, regional unit, hydrological balance, comprehensive hydrological characteristics

The paper contains conception of regional hydrogeography of Slovakia which leans on six regional units complying with condition of "regionality" with regards to long-term hydrological balance. Comprehensive characteristics of regional units is based on regional values of hydrological and physical-geographical characters which cover not only the size of hydrological balance components but also genesis and quality of runoff and take into the account the key problems rising from the relationship between the runoff and land cover or economic activities carried out in basins of regional units. Key words: regional hydrogeography, regional unit, hydrological balance, comprehensive hydrological characteristics

planation surface, tectoplain, West Carpathians, landscape evolution, denudation chronology

Paper deals with possible explanation of the rise of regional planation surfaces in active orogens. Polygenetic planation surface relatively rapidly created in conditions of prevailing extension (subsidence) tectonics of young orogens is defined as tectoplain. Its rapid rise is due to tectonic downthrow of big part of the block under erosion basis, rapid retreat of fault slopes, expansive abrasion in transgressive regime, local sediment deposition that together with tectonic erosion eliminates isostatic compensational uplift. Forming of tectoplain is alternative hypothesis of the West Carpathians midmountain level creation in Miocene. Twelve verification/falsification procedures are formulated as a basis for corroboration (confutat-ion) the hypothesis. They contain analysis of spatial distribution and character of the Neogene sediments, fission track analysis, analysis of spatial relationships of denudation and accumulation remnants of tectoplain, and construction of complex dynamic model of regional evolution. Key words: planation surface, tectoplain, West Carpathians, landscape evolution, denudation chronology

geomorphological map, geomorphological analysis, sum, syntax, semantics, classification

The study points to the fact that compilation of geomorphological map can lean on one of two hypotheses. It is the hypothesis that a set of mapped forms is a sum (aggregate) or hypothesis that this set is a system (set of interacting forms). The study describes the geomorphological mapping based on hypothesis that the set of mapped forms is a sum. The author analyses in detail syntactic and semantic aspects of such mapping and concludes that the majority of geomorphological maps reflecting the territory of Slovakia were compiled on the principle of a sum.
