second housing, regional differentiation in Czechia, settlement structure, leisure, lifestyle

The paper attempts to explain research development in second housing. The presented knowledge has been gathered from long-term research. A brief international comparison and discussion of literature proves the importance of second housing in the value system of the Czech population. Emphasis has been put on the significance of second housing in the lifestyle, use of leisure time and specific activities, position of second housing in the settlement structure, selected socio-economic aspects as well as the role of second housing in the rural area, on the basis of studies as well as personal experience, observations and field surveys above all. The second part of the paper is empirical, based on the results of field and questionnaire research on regional differentiation of second housing in Czechia and attempts at reflection of the development and changes after 1989 and at the turn of the millennium and points out the general and common features as well as the essential regional differences and specifications. In the conclusion, the general trends and possible perspectives of second housing are outlined.

spatial differentiation, crime, dependence, indicators, correlation and regression analyses, Slovakia

The paper deals with regional differentiation of crime and its determinants identified by selected indicators. Formulation of the problem was determined by absence of exact research involved with crime aetiology in Slovakia, which may, as in and other countries, help us to explain and understand the implications of crime occurrence. The aim of the study is to outline causal and determinant relationships (the relation and level of dependence) in spatial differentiation of crime and approaches to their interpretation. Methods of correlation and regression analyses were applied. The results confirmed a great dependence of crime on several indicators, which seem to determine the level and structure of crime in Slovakia. The study also provides some interesting information about spatial dependence of crime differentiation obtained form correlation analyses oriented to observation of the comparatively complex relationships and dependency of crime on a broad range of indicators.

indicators, quality of life index, and spatial differentiation of quality of life, Slovakia

The aim of the study is to comprehend the quality of life, to identify its substance, and the factors controlling it along with the task of geography in such study. By means of a set of indicators, which were aggregated into the quality of life index, an answer to the question how is the quality of life spatially differentiated in individual districts of Slovakia is sought. Twenty-one indicators are identified in three domains. Spatial differentiation of life quality in the domains and the aggregated quality of life index is represented on maps. The resulting quality of life index is derived from the characteristics.

blocks of flats, solar energy, urban areas, CORINE Land Cover, GIS, Slovakia

Urbanization in the Slovak Republic launched a new housing construction boom which provided enough accommodation for an ever increasing number of people in cities. The strongest wave of housing construction occurred after the Second World War. Though the problem of accommodation had been solved, other problems regarding a high density of built-up areas, construction quality of buildings including a low energy efficiency of buildings (typically blocks of buildings with panel technology) appeared. The land cover classes of the CORINE Land Cover database regarding urban areas do not provide information on types of residential buildings. However, this information is valuable in solar energy and also other applications. This paper presents a methodology for mapping these zones in all cities of the Slovak Republic. The result of mapping is a digital database that can be effectively used in various analyses including estimation of renewable energy potential, quantitative urbanism, renovation planning and further development of these areas.

cereals, winter rape, wheat, rye, barley, oat, maize, soil productive potential, soil categorization, suitability of the landscape for crop growing

Knowing the demands of agricultural crops and knowing the potential of land is the basic prerequisite for an effective utilization of agricultural landscape. The aim of this paper is to point out the possibilities of growing the main kinds of cereals on agricultural land of Slovakia. Since soil is a medium, which synthesizes the properties of landscape, and vital plant roots are there as well, mostly the pedosphere with its set of productive and environmental characteristics and functions is investigated. The soils were classified as very suitable, suitable, less suitable and unsuitable and were specified for growing winter wheat, rye, barley, oat and maize. Categorization of suitability is presented on map charts. The data on soil characteristics were taken from a detailed information database of the Soil Science and Conservation Research Institute processed in the ArcMap information system.
