The Institute was founded in 1957 as a Mining Institute of SAS. Later was transformed and under the name of Institute of Geotechnics of SAS is existing from the year 1993. The research at the Institute is aimed at the study in the fields of geotechnics, mechanochemistry and particle science, new technology developments for underground works and environmental studies by raw materials and energy exploitation. There are six international institutional agreements in cooperation with Israel, Poland, Russia and Ukraine.
