Support for science and research in the selected research areas important for the Slovak Republic

On January 24, 2008 the Slovak Academy of Sciences signed a contract on non-returnable financial contribution from EEA Financial Mechanism

and from the state budget of the Slovak Republic to intermediate the Block Grant “Support for science and research in the selected research areas important for the Slovak Republic“. The contract was signed between the Office of the Government of SR and SAS, the Office of the Government is in the position of National Contact Point to Committee of Financial Mechanism, which has a seat at Brussels. Financial Mechanism of European Economic Area was created by three countries, namely: Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein. On the base of the accession agreement of Slovak Republic to the European Economic Area the Financial Mechanism contributes to the project implementation by 85%, the stat budget of the Slovak Republic contributes by 15%.

The Block Grant will be implemented in four research areas, namely:
• Nanotechnologies
• Biotechnology and Food
• Sustainable Development
• Renewable Energy Resources

In the frame of public call the research project proposals can be submitted by research organisations which have their seats in the Slovak Republic and are from public, non-governmental organisation and private sectors. On the base of expert evaluation of the quality of the submitted applications for providing non-returnable financial contribution the SAS will select the end-recipients of the Grant.

The implementation period of the Block Grant is planned for the years 2008-2011 (the implementation termination is set for April 30, 2011).
