On Thursday, March 22, Professor Wim van Saarloos, Vice President of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences, was a guest at the Slovak Academy of Sciences. In the company of Martin Lombarts from the Dutch Embassy in Slovakia, Professor Pavol Šajgalík, President of SAS, and other members of the SAS Presidium hosted the meeting..
Physics Professor Wim van Saarloos has been Vice President of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences of the Netherlands since September 2016 and will become its President in June. For this reason it was interesting to gain more insight into the structure of the current state of Dutch science and to get acquainted with its vision, particularly with a view to closer cooperation in science and research in Slovakia and the Netherlands. In this context, SAS Deputy Chair Professor Peter Samuely presented the mission, the legislative anchoring and the structure of SAS. One topic discussed was the funding of science and research in both countries and the search for breakthroughs in the preparation of possible joint projects.
Chairman of SAS prof. Pavol Šajgalík also analysed in detail the present state of university education in Slovakia, the international accreditation of SAS institutes and their process of transformation into a public research institution. Economic pressure on science and research efficiency is also felt in the Netherlands, but it works more effectively on professional projects, analyses and consultations with the Dutch government than is the case in Slovakia. A special topic was the use of Eurofunds for science and research, in relation to which Slovakia is lagging for some reason.
SAS endeavours to enhance international co-operation, to create conditions for joint projects of individual SAS research teams and institutes. In the field of science and research, the Netherlands is among the more successful countries in making use of and investing resources in its future. This resonated in the afternoon presentation of Professor Wim van Saarloos which was organized by the SAS Learned Society at Dúbravská cesta in Bratislava. Presented by prof. Mgr. Peter Moczo, DrSc. Prof. Wim van Saarloos introduced a model for developing science and research in the Netherlands. Through a brief excursion through history, he compared the development of the Netherlands and Slovakia, including the comparison of the school and university education system and pointed to the maturity and success of the Dutch model of science and research which is among the best in the European Union. In some parameters, it is even more effective than in the UK, and in relation to Brexit, the Netherlands could become the leader of scientific progress in Europe. (SPN)
