The elections to the SAS Presidium for the 2017 – 2021 term have come to a close. In the second runoff round of the election of candidates for members of the SAS Presidium for the period 2017 – 2021, the SAS Assembly elected Mgr. Róbert Karul PhD. (SAS Philosophical Institute) to the SAS Presidium at its meeting on 4 April 2017.
The elected members of the SAS Presidium for the 2017 – 2021 term are as follows:
PhDr. Dušan Gálik, CSc., Mgr. Róbert Karul, PhD., prof. MVDr. Juraj Koppel, DrSc., RNDr. Aleš Kučera, CSc., doc. RNDr. Ľubica Lacinová, DrSc., Mgr. JUDr. Martina Lubyová, PhD., prof. RNDr. Karol Marhold, CSc., Mgr. Juraj Marušiak, PhD., RNDr. Miroslav Morovics, CSc., Ing. Mária Omastová, DrSc., prof. RNDr. Peter Samuely, DrSc., RNDr. Pavol Siman, PhD., Dr. Ing. František Simančík, prof. RNDr. Pavol Šajgalík, DrSc., Mgr. Martin Venhart, PhD.
After completion of the election of candidates (held in three rounds on 02.02., 14. 03. and 04. 04. 2017) to the full number of 15 members of the Presidium of SAS, the SAS Assembly proceeded to the election of the President of SAS for the same term 2017 – 2021 on the afternoon of April 4, 2017. The members of the SAS Assembly elected prof. Mgr. Pavol Šajgalík, PhD as President of SAS.
"The Slovak Academy of Sciences is a leading scientific institution. My ambition continues to be to ensure that we are visible at least in the European research area, to get us to the level of countries such as the Czech Republic and Austria, and to catch up with countries such as Germany and other developed countries of the world, " SAS President Pavol Šajgalík told the media following the election.
As per SAS legislation (133/2002 Coll.) the SAS Assembly submitted a proposal for the appointment of the SAS President to the Slovak Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport, which was submitted to the Slovak President. Under Article 102 of the Constitution, the President of SAS was then appointed by the President.

About prof. RNDr. Pavol Šajgalík, DrSc.:

Pavol Šajgalík (born in 1955) graduated from the faculty of natural sciences of the Comenius University (Department of Experimental Physics, 1979). His entire professional life in science has been spent working at the Slovak Academy of Sciences: at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry in various positions as well as director of the institute. Since 2013, he has been a member of the SAS Presidium - first as economic Vice-President of SAS (2013-2015) and then as SAS President (2015-2017), a position he will continue to hold for the 2017-2021 term.
In his scientific work in the field of materials research, structural ceramics, ceramic nanocomposites, phase transformations and microstructures he has made many important scientific achievements and won international awards. He has also participated in the education of young scientists and has taken part in numerous academic study programs abroad (Japan, Sweden, Austria, Germany, Italy, the US and other countries). He is also a member of several prestigious scientific societies around the world.
In 2015, the Slovak President awarded Paul Šajgalik a class III Ľudovít Štúr award for his exceptional contributions to the development of science, technology and education.
