The Slovak Academy of Sciences has invited foreign experts on site to assess the quality of the individual research institutes, making it the first institution in Slovakia to choose an independent, professional, international audit for its reflection.
The results of the evaluation and recommendations for SAS were presented by the chair of the expert panel, prof. Marja Makarovowa last Thursday at a press conference in the presence of Finance Minister Peter Kažimír and Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sports Peter Plavčan on the SAS premises in Bratislava. Recommendations for SAS were also presented by other experts. The panel have been visiting SAS institutes since last October and rating their work compared to the European Research Area. The results pleased not only the experts but also the President of the Academy of Sciences, prof. Pavol Šajgalík:
"In Slovakia we have two institutes that are among the best in Europe - the Polymer Institute and the Institute of Ethnology which are carrying out research that is among international leaders in the European area. Another nine institutions rank significantly above the European average which means that at least 11 of our institutions stand out in the European Research Area. The others rank as average and even slightly below average. The International experts see our science mainly in a positive light. What is most evident is that we have a number of outstanding and motivated young scientists, and that is good news for the future of SAS,”
With this quality assessment, SAS is fulfilling its commitment to the Government which was made on signing the Stabilisation contract in summer 2016. This provides a stable budget with a minimum annual value of 60 million euro until 2018. In identifying excellence, SAS is paving the way for better funding in the future. Those institutes that rank lower in the evaluation will propose action plans. The coming years, should see them move to a higher level comparable with European institutions with the same focus.
"Those institutes with objections to the evaluation may appeal the decision within three weeks. The Academy will release the full evaluation once this period has passed, "said Chair of the Accreditation Board Ing. Mary Omastová, DrSc.
At the press conference, Slovak Minister for Finance Peter Kažimír expressed his appreciation for the approach taken by SAS and the results of the independent international evaluation and confirmed, in cooperation with the Slovak Ministry of Education, Science and Research, improved means for the best institutes of one million one hundred thousand Euro in support of excellence and leading in the European research area. Slovak Minister of Education, Science and Research, Peter Plavčan commended science in Slovakia having reached a high level and confirmed support for its further improvement.
