Slovak President Andrej Kiska paid tribute to historian Ivan Kamenec with the state award of 1st class Ľudovít Štúr medal. This award is an acknowledgment of years of extraordinary contribution to the development of democracy, protection of human rights and freedom and development of historical science.

On the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the establishment of the Slovak Republic on 9 January 2017, President Andrej Kiska honoured twenty personalities for their outstanding lifetime contribution.
In his speech the President stated: "It is an honour and also a great personal pleasure on behalf of the Slovak Republic to reward these twenty personalities for their outstanding lifetime achievement for our country. And thanks to your tireless work, unique talent, personal courage, exceptional professionalism, as well as the hard work carried out on a daily basis, our Slovakia is a more beautiful, smarter, more inventive, more just and happier place to be."
After receiving his award, Ivan Kamenec told the Slovak News Agency that this is just the tip of the iceberg and a huge contribution of his colleagues and family. "There are many Historians such as myself in Slovakia. However none of us should think that our discoveries are final truths. This is not the case. It is about further developing these findings in a favourable atmosphere. Historians sometimes have to unsettle the public with some worrying and at times unpleasant questions as opposed to mentoring and teaching them. This is what I try to do”, he explains.
Ivan Kamenec was born 27 August, 1938 in Nitra, and has been working at the SAS Institute of History since 1969. His research domain is, among others, the area of the post modern and modern Slovak history of the 20th century, with an emphasis on political history, cultural history and the issue of historical awareness.
