The Slovak Academy of Sciences has undergone rigorous evaluation as part of the Teaming scheme by the European Commission. Of the more than 150 European projects selected, the CEMEA project was also chosen by experts among the first thirteen. The CEMEA project aims at establishing a joint Centre of Excellence for advanced materials application. The success of the project is attributed to its high level and excellence.

"In the face of serious competition from all European countries three Slovak projects have stood out, from this point of view we are the only country that had so many successful projects. The Slovak Academy of Sciences can now set up an Institute which will carry out quality research, but more importantly, much attention will be paid to the transfer of knowledge into practice,"explained the chairman of the Slovak Academy of Sciences Prof. Mgr. Paul Šajgalík, PhD.

In practice, this should mean that in our country will continue to pursue quality research in advanced materials to be used in biomedicine, biotechnology and sustainable energy. The Academy is working on this project together with the VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland and the University of Helsinki. The results this research centre will bring will be used by Slovakia as part of research and innovation strategy for smart specialization (RIS3). The center will largely cooperate internationally and will actively participate with local industry on the domestic level.

"In the CEMEA project we will focus on basic research (materials research and nanotechnology, biomedicine and biotechnology, sustainable energy), applied research (technology transfer) as well as training and an educational program for young researchers", added Vice SAS Ing. Karol Frohlich, PhD.

The CEMEA project is worth 30 million euro. Alexander Dubcek with the FunGLASS project at the University of Trenčin also succeeded in the Teaming scheme of the Horizont 2020 program which will focus on research on the industrially usable surface properties of glass. The National Forest Centre in Zvolen is a further project that was selected among the 13 best projects.
