The Semantics of Fictional Discourse

As part of its internationalisation strategy, the Institute of Philosophy has commenced another series of international conferences. Apart from already established Issues on (im) possible conferences, the analytic philosophy research group organised a conference entitled Philosophy of Language (I): The Semantics of Fictional Discourse. The conference took place October 19-20, 2016 in Bratislava and hosted 25 speakers from around the world.
As the title indicates, the main topic of the conference was the problem of fictional discourse, with reference to fictional characters and the very meaningfulness of fictional discourse. Due to wide interest in the topic of contemporary philosophy, the conference was divided into three keynote lectures and two parallel sessions on accepted papers. This year, invitations to deliver keynote lectures were accepted by Stacie Friend (Birkbeck College), Alberto Voltolini (University of Turin) and Petr Koťátko (Czech Academy of Sciences). Interestingly, the conference was preceded by a one day intensive workshop featuring Stacie Friend and Manuel-Garcia Carpintero. The aim of the workshop was to discuss current issues in the semantics of fictional discourse into which the philosophers mentioned have significantly contributed.
Due to the success of the conference, the organisers plan to continue organising the event every two years. By doing so, they aim both to strengthen the position of Slovak philosophy on the world’s philosophy map, and gain new insights into philosophical practice from outside so-called ‘Central and Eastern Europe’.
