The interacademic process of evaluation of the scientific organisations of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in 2016 which is provided by a panel of experts from abroad is set to continue in the week of 7 to 11 November 2016 with meetings of the evaluation panel with academic representatives of scientific organisations of the Earth and Space Sciences.
The Chairperson of the panel for the evaluation of section 1 scientific organizations is prof. Pär Omling from Sweden, with members prof. Martin Hynes (Ireland), prof. Helmut Weissert (Switzerland) and prof. John Wood (United Kingdom). The Chairperson of the comprehensive meta-panel, covering the three assessment panels is prof. Marja Makarow from Finland.
The first in the series this week's meetings was the presentation of the SAS Institute of Earth Sciences, specifically the Geology and Geophysics Departments at the SAV assembly hall in Patrónka, Bratislava. The week-long meeting schedule also includes sessions at the Earth Science departments in Kosice and Stara Lesna.
Presentation and discussion meetings are the second evaluated criteria, while the first is a detailed accreditation questionnaire. The basic structure of assessment is prepared analogically for all scientific departments (Section 3 – Social Sciences, Humanities, Arts, and Culture attended meetings with its panel in October 2016, and meetings for Section 2 – Life, Chemical, Medical, and Environmental Sciences are due to take place in the last week of November).
The goal of accreditation is to assess the level of research in the individual research organizations with an emphasis on international connectivity and the progressive direction of research for the development of Slovak society as well as to strengthen the position of Slovak science in the European Research Area.
The combined evaluation of individual panels results in the formulation of recommendations for SAS and forms the characteristics of Slovak science, its fundamental research and progressive development for the development of Slovak society. A further aim is to strengthen our position in the European Research Area as well as the reputation of the SAS in Slovak society.
The individual panels evaluate their findings which is followed by the formulation of final recommendations, expected at the beginning of 2017.
SAS Accreditation Committee Chairwoman Ing SAS. Mary Omastová, PhD., is also participating in the meetings as are members of the SAS Presidium and representatives of the SAS Assembly
