Eighth volume of Beliana released

On the afternoon of Thursday, 23 March at the SAV small conference centre on Štefánikova 3 in Bratislava, the eighth volume of the Beliana encyclopaedia was presented. The President of the Academy of Sciences, prof. Pavol Šajgalík presented the volume to Slovak President Andrej Kiska beforehand.
The 8th volume of Beliana, the largest Slovak encyclopaedia which was prepared by a team of writers and editors from the SAS Encyclopaedic Institute, contains 678 pages with more than 4200 entries from various fields in alphabetical order ranging from the entry ‘Kalhana’ (name of the Kashmiri historian) to the entry ‘cockpit’. The volume is illustrated with period photographs, maps, graphs and illustrations.
At the presentation, the chairman of the editorial board and initiator of the project, prof. Štefan Luby and Encyclopaedic Institute director, PaeDr. Zuzana Vargová were introduced. The President of the Academy of Sciences prof. Pavol Šajgalík was also present, as were members of the SAS Presidium, authors of the works, co-authors, editors, guests of honour and academic representatives.
"Encyclopaedic entries are not formed easily. It is like a Mozart sonata, it must have everything while not having too much," mentions prof. Štefan Luby. Together with the director they expressed their gratitude to co-authors, editors and colleagues. "Our ambition is to be a national encyclopaedia, many entries in Beliana have been developed for the first time to this extent," said PaeDr. Zuzana Vargová. (Comments from prof.
