SAS and crisis in social discussion

The Slovak Academy of Sciences is responding to current social challenges with the social analysis of Slovakia project. The study will map the mistrust of its citizens of democratic institutions and mechanisms, the relationship with mass media and the behaviour of people in the digital environment. At the same time it takes reasoning used in the debate on public issues into account. The coordinator of this project is Juraj Draxler, former Slovak Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport.
"This will be an interdisciplinary activity that will combine known approaches in sociology, experimental psychology as well as for example the philosophy of language and anthropology," said Juraj Draxler.
"Distrust of traditional media and strengthening of irrational forms of explanation of the world is not just growing in our country. We want to map the changing debate and accurately understand what is going on in our country and in the rest of the Western world. " He added that the research uses a variety of analytical tools - from opinion polls to analysis of discussions on digital platforms.
Draxler is head of the SAS Institute of Strategic Analysis which was set up by the SAS Presidium in November 2016. The Institute is tasked with coordinating projects that respond to pressing social challenges and which require interdisciplinary collaboration of scientists from a number of disciplines. The actual research activity is carried out by academics from various SAS institutes, along with input from external experts.
"Social Analysis of Slovakia will be a kind of flagship of the institute, but will not embody just one single project," said Juraj Draxler. "Among other things, we will try to contribute to seeking financial resources for the activities of the Academy."
