From October three panels of international experts attended meetings on Institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and discussed on their research, vision of future and other aspects of science. Yesterday they visited the last one - Institute of Neuroimmunology and finished this stage of the Academy evaluation.
The evaluation of the Institutes from the department of Life, Chemical, Medical, and Environmental Sciences has been held since 21. till 30. of November. Panel of experts was chaired by prof. Toivo Maimets, who works at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, University of Tartu (Estonia). Other panelists were prof. Håkan Billig (Sweden), prof. Carl Gustav Gahmberg (Finland), prof. Ina Tegen (Germany) and prof. Imre Vass (Hungary).
Institutions of the second department of sciences are scattered across the Slovakia, so the panelists visited also Zvolen, Nitra, Košice and Ivánka pri Dunaji in addition to Bratislava. Specific part of these presentation-discussion meetings were also presentations of the infrastructure, what launched the debate on the use of structural funds.
Foreign experts will now write the individual evaluation sheets for the Institutes to help identify the strengths and weaknesses of the Academy and give the recommendations to help improve its level of research. "The panel will have another week to complete all the reports. Then the heads of the three panels will meet on January 20 in metapanel, chaired by prof. Marja Makarow and balance their partial evaluation. These final reports will be known around the end of January, "says Chair of the Accreditation Commission Mária Omastová.
"To read the recommendations from foreign experts, and to see their point of view of the Institutions will be certainly a great help for us," says also Maria Omastová and she also adds that the final report is likely to have two parts. The first will include recommendations for the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the other is designed for decision-makers, which has influence on decision of, for example, funding of PhD students.
