Gold medal SAS was awarded to Irina Bokova

Director General of UNESCO Irina Bokova was awarded a Gold medal SAS by President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences prof. Pavol Šajgalík during her official weekend visit in Slovakia. The highest individual prize was awarded to Irina Bokova by the Academy for significant intensification of cooperation between UNESCO and the Slovak Republic in the fields of education, science and culture.

Irina Bokova is Director-General of UNESCO since 2009. She is the first woman from Eastern Europe, leading the organization. Her activities are part of a program that is based on advocating dialogue between experts and policymakers when dealing with problematic issues which has society-wide impact. She also contributes to the activation of young scientists and researchers and she also took part on asserting the proposals of the Slovak Republic in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova also took part in the roundtable in Smolenice with guests invited by SAS from the scientific, educational, cultural and commercial sector on the theme: Creativity and innovation in theory and in practice. Discussion brought up many inspiring ideas focused on a trend that should lead to critical thinking.

„It was a stimulating discussion on science, education, culture, discovering new technologies, which has resulted in a need for „releasing of chains“ in a free creative thinking that allows to discover new solutions and moves the society. Irina Bokova in this meaning underlined the crucial role of education and training of the young generation“, said President of the SAS prof. Pavol Šajgalík.

To develop creativity and innovation in science we need to create not only good material conditions, but also stimulating conditions with the freedom of thinking and cooperation of scientific, political and social subjects.

„Education, exchange of ideas, developing potential of critical thinking of young people and opening up for new challenges is essential,“ stressed Irina Bokova, who sincerely thanks at the end of the meeting not only for Gold medal of SAS, but also for the hospitality and the opportunity to listen to a lot of professional and thought-provoking opinions by invited guests.
