On 28 April 2016 Prof. Des Richardson from the University in Sydney gave a guest lecture in the premises of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) Virology Institute at the Biomedical Centre (BMC). It was addressed to scientific workers from SAS institutes at the BMC who are engaged in the area of oncogenic research.
Des Richardson, a professor of pathology, deals in medical research with the metabolizing of iron and the role this plays in the pathophysiology of various diseases, especially oncogenic and neurodegenerative ones. He is also engaged in the development of new anti-tumor substances, known as iron chelators. His research is targeted at the development of new medicine for clinical use. He has been awarded several US patents.
Prof. Richardson works at the School of Medical Sciences of the Bosch Institute in the University of Sydney. He also collaborates with the Charles University in Prague. His collaboration with the SAS Institute of Experimental Endocrinology BMC is at a consultative level regarding research methodology and the use of laboratory technology in cell and molecular biology.
Dr Ján Bakoš introduced the expert lecture and evaluated its benefit as a step towards establishing relations with Prof. Richardson's workplace in Australia.
"At present it is ever more obvious that various human tissues are capable of regenerating and processes that are involved in changes of cell growth have many common features. In this context, the main role of the academic's work is to understand the normal as well as pathological phenomena of the human body. The scientific outputs of Prof. Richardson are at present in clinical trials," Dr Bakoš added.
