Thirty years after the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl

The worst nuclear accident in the history of nuclear power happened thirty years ago. During the test, of a new security system the reactor became overheated and then exploded.
Radioactive substances were progressively released into the air according to wind direction and proceeded through the western part of the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia and gradually affected almost the entire territory of Europe.
An international conference: Chernobyl 1986 - past, consequences recourses was held in the Hall of Mirrors of the Primaciálny palác in Bratislava on April 26.
It was organized by the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute, Institute of National Remembrance and the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The widely structured topics about radiation monitoring of Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute, the environmental consequences, about ideological conceal of the disaster and also about the thirty years of psychological and neuropsychiatric lessons of Chernobyl were presented.
Presenters mentioned the connection with meaningless cycling Peace Race in Kiev after the disaster, on which western countries cancelled the participation of their teams. The consequences of the accident in Slovakia, among other things, in view of the then national security were also discussed. Ján Salaj and Martin Hajduch from the Institute of Plant Genetics and Biotechnology SAS spoke at the conference with a presentation of the radioactivity and plants topic.
It is difficult to accurately record the number of deaths caused by the events at Chernobyl - range from hundreds to thousands is estimated. The problem is still widely discussed and its long-term effects are still not known by the experts. (spn)
