Musicologica Slovaca is the only scholarly journal in Slovakia in the field of musicology. It publishes original contributions to historical musicology, ethnomusicology and systematic musicology. The journal was established in 1969 as a twice-yearly publication of the Institute of Musicology, Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS), continuing a tradition of issuing miscellanies and yearly publications (Hudobnovedný sborník 1953 – 1954; Hudobnovedné štúdie 1955 – 1966). From 1970 Musicologica Slovaca appeared as a miscellany with irregular periodicity, and from the early 1990s under the extended title Musicologica Slovaca et Europaea (Vol. 17 - 26, 1992 - 2008). In 2010 the Institute of Musicology SAS revived this scholarly journal under its original name and with its original periodicity of two issues yearly. Continuity with the preceding volumes published since 1969 is maintained on the title page, where alongside the new numbering the old is given in brackets: Musicologica Slovaca, Vol. 1 (27), 2010. The conception of journal content is based on an integrating purpose: to create a publishing space for all disciplines and sub-disciplines of musical scholarship where fundamental and applied research is being conducted.

The journal is listed in the international bibliographic databases CEJSH and RILM.
