Annotation: | This proposed project is a continuation of long-term successful effort of the authors’ group from the Institute of Chemistry, Slovak Academy of Sciences, to expand current knowledge on microbial enzymes involved in plant cell wall degradation. The project is a part of a world-wide struggle to develop processes for a complete exploitation of this so far underutilized but abundant and annually renewable source of carbon and energy. The project will be focused on the properties and biotechnological potential of auxiliary xylanolytic enzymes. Specifically, beta-xylosidases, alpha-glucuronidases, alpha-L-arabinofuranosidases and acetylxylan esterases will be studied. A relation between structural diversity and substrate specificity and regioselectivity will be clarified for all these enzyme families. Great emphasis will be laid on the action of these enzymes on the most recalcitrant epitopes originating from xylans of various types as the most abundant plant hemicellulose. The unraveling of so far entirely unknown action will contribute without any doubt to a development of efficient and environment-friendly industrial processes of biodegradation and bioconversion of plant biomass and its conversion to beneficial products. |
